Moorooka is a suburb of inner-city Brisbane. It is known for it’s large Eastern-African community. This is reflective of the shops and restaurants that make-up the high-street. This has led to Moorooka being titled “Little Africa”. A study into African immigrants in South-East Queensland showed that Moorooka had the highest concentration of Eastern-African people of any of the suburbs studied¹. The report also showed that many of the African residents that lived in Moorooka are being displaced due to a rise in housing costs¹. In an effort to find more affordable housing many residents are being forced out of Moorooka into other suburbs where they feel isolated and disconnected from their ethnic community. Many displaced residents return on a Saturday to do their weekly shop or catchup with friends.
